Robiquetia dutertei (Cootes, Naive & MD De Leon). A new orchid species endemic to the Philippines. Named in honor of His Excellency President Rodrigo Duterte.
The authors are thrilled to announce the publication of Robiquetia dutertei in Die Orchidee 2(11)2016.
Though previously seen in plant markets in Manila and sold as Robiquetia cerina, its exact provenance and identity had not been established until members of the Cootes Study Group documented it in situ and compared it with the species it had often been confused with.
The species is found at high elevations in the vanishing forests of Mindanao and we are hopeful that change will also come to preserve our natural resources.
As we all know, a country’s geography, flora and fauna help define it as a nation. The Philippines is one of the most biodiverse nations with many treasures already lost forever, yet so much more to discover and keep.
